Saturday, March 28, 2009
1-5 pm

Cost: $10 includes museum admission; $5 members. Educator clock hours available.
Pre-registration is strongly encouraged as space is limited. Please call 253.722.2455 or
email Education@TacomaArtMuseum.org.

About the program:
In 1938 the Caldecott Medal was established to annually recognize the
most distinguished children's picture book by an American illustrator.
Tacoma Art Museum's Art Resource Center recently acquired the
complete collection of Caldecott award titles. The ARC Volunteers
present this half-day program to explore the changes in children's book
illustration these books represent over the past seven decades.

Jennifer Duffy, King County Librarian and Caldecott Committee Member, will open the
program with an overview of the selection process. She will be followed by Linda Pavonetti
and James Cipielewski, both Associate Professors in Reading and Language Arts at Oakland
University, who will discuss the history of illustration, turning points in the evolution of
children's picture books in the context of social events, developments in education, as
well as impacts on literacy. Richard Jesse Watson, award winning illustrator and author of
numerous picture books, will discuss his first hand experiences with changes in the industry.
Susan Anderson-Newham, Early Learning Supervising Librarian in the Pierce County Library
System, will share her experiences teaching with picture books that have received the
Caldecott and discuss their appeal over time.

This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition
David Macaulay: The Way He Works. Macaulay received the
Caldecott award for his book Black and White in 1991.

Jana,

I'm sorry for this, but Friday the 20th, my next volunteer date, has been completely gobbled up with last minute recording sessions. I won't be able to staff the ARC that afternoon.   It's somewhat unusual for me to have so many past Fridays hit with changes.  If it keeps up, it might be safer to for me to switch to another day.

Hi Jana,

Something came up this Saturday that coincides with my 10am ARC shift
so I won't be able to make it. Sorry for the inconvenience and I hope
you find someone to cover it.

Thanks,

TAM Volunteers: ARC Program Update

Hello ARC Volunteers-

I wanted to let you know how things are going with the Caldecott program thus far. We have sent out contracts to our speakers and our postcard design got sent out today. Our postcards should be here next week by Third Thursday and Educator Evening! We will be working on the mailing soon and I am sending out a request for help with that mailing but you will be the first to know and, I hope, plan to be there.

Assist with a Mailing on Tuesday, February 24 from 9 am until done. We need to spread the word about the ARC’s upcoming program Picture This: The Evolution of Children’s Book Illustration.

Contact: Jana Wennstrom at 253.272.4258 x3030 or jwennstrom@tacomaartmuseum.org.

I also wanted to update you on the financial end of our program. So far, we have used the $1000 allocated from the Education budget on travel for 2 of the speakers. I now know that the postcards are going to run about $1000 plus shipping (local) and the mailing for 2000 of those postcards will run about $300. We still have honorariums and some other items to cover as well. So far, several volunteers have donated $800 collectively. Thank you!!!!! Unfortunately, that still leaves us short for the expenses listed above. If you are able to help, even in the smallest way, with a financial donation toward this program, your assistance would be greatly appreciated. We have a fantastic program planned and I believe we will all be very proud by what will be accomplished- we just have to get there! Feel free to submit any donations to me (made payable to Tacoma Art Museum if you write a check) and I will make sure that it makes it to the appropriate fund to go towards our needs.

Thank you for all that you do for Tacoma Art Museum.

Best regards,

-Jana
