TAM Volunteers: ARC Meeting Notes from Jan 10

Hello ARC Volunteers-

Thanks to those of you that were able to attend Saturday’s meeting: Wendy, Sarah, Elodie, Linda M, Elsie, Marcia, Todd, Mimi, Nancy and Somer.

We had a great workshop with guest speaker Natalie McNair-Huff about how to do more effective internet searches. I have attached a handout that covers much of the pertinent material and a topic worksheet so that you can practice doing searches. Natalie stressed the need for practice so I encourage you to give some searches a try using the worksheet and the various search engines listed. Please let me know if you have any questions and, if I cannot answer them, Natalie has graciously offered her assistance at any time. I will have a card up in the ARC as a thank you. Please sign it even if you didn’t attend as her worksheet and handout will benefit us all.

We also did an update on the ARC Caldecott program scheduled for March 28 called Picture This: The Evolution of Children’s Book Illustration.

Of the $1000 allocated for the program, we have already spent $928.40 towards the airfare of two of our speakers. Some additional costs we should still be aware of are: Printing and mailing, Honorarium for one speaker, advertising, display labels, linens for display tables on the day of event, and a small thank you gift for Jennifer Duffy who is introducing the program. Thank you to all who have contributed to the program so far. At this point, we have $800 in donations that have come in towards the items listed above. We are hoping to get to at least $1000, if possible, to cover those expenses. Mimi has graciously offered to purchase a Caldecott video for the ARC as additional promotional material for the program and to add to our Teacher Resources. She will be in contact with Courtney to work with her on possible titles. Thanks Mimi!

There is still a need for leadership in a couple of areas of this program including: Someone to coordinate advertising efforts, someone to design displays for the ARC and Event Space,  and someone to be the lead for the day of the program. If you are interested in taking on one of these leadership roles, you will be working in conjunction with me and the Education Dept so you will not be totally on your own. Just let me know if one of those interests you.

For those of you working on artist files or adding to the contents of those, we wanted to clarify what to cut, copy and save. When going through magazines or newspapers, please mark or copy only those articles that contain enough information that it would be worthwhile to someone doing a research paper. If there is a casual mention, it would not be considered useful enough to keep a copy. Ads from galleries are also not of interest as we tend to get gallery postcards already. We are also not interested at this time in clipping articles about the well established artists we currently have artist files for (Van Gogh, for example) unless there is something ground shakingly new that it could not be found in a book. Finally, if you find a NW artist that we don’t already have an artist file for, before marking the article for inclusion, please do a bit of research on the artist. Make sure that you can find (and print!) a copy of their resume, including a brief biography and artist statement, if possible. If we cannot find any information beyond a magazine article, it may not be worthwhile to create an artist file. Thanks to all of you going through the magazines. Your efforts are appreciated and add to our artist file collection. We are always looking for more help on this project so let me know if you are interested but need some instruction.

February 19 is Educator Evening at Tacoma Art Museum from 5:30 – 8 pm. We reviewed the Teacher Resources (the information you will need is under Teacher Resources in the “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the ARC” manual at the desk) and the new categories added to those shelves: Teach and Kids. “Teach” call numbers are materials that can be used by instructors to make them more effective teachers of art related topics. “Kids” call numbers are children’s books that teachers can check out to help support a Tacoma Art Museum curriculum or a curriculum of their own making. Please make sure that you do not re-shelve books with “Kids” in their call number with our other children’s books that have a “J” or “J Cald” call number. If you are available and interested in helping out with Educator Evening in February, please let me know!

The ARC needs 2 volunteers for the Biennial Opening scheduled for Saturday, January 31. We need volunteers from 7 – 9 pm. Wendy confirmed that she is available to help that evening (thank you!!!) but I still need one more volunteer. We will have a video playing in ARC and I want 2 volunteers so that you will each be able to take turns attending the festivities without worrying about leaving the space unattended. Please let me know if you are available to work this evening.

TAM Volunteers: Reminder about meeting and potluck on 1/10/09

Hello ARC Volunteers-

I just wanted to remind you about our meeting and potluck tomorrow. We will start at 10 am and we have a guest speaker coming to talk about on-line research. Following our meeting (starting no later than 11:45 am) we will have a potluck for those that wish to visit and share food. Food can be left in the break room on the Admin level. I will have a sign out on one of the tables.

I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow!
